Social Action Committee

The Social Action Committee organizes opportunities for tikkun olam (repairing the world) through advocacy, education, service, and networking activities. The Committee leads the congregation’s Interfaith Hospitality Network initiative to provide temporary shelter for homeless families, as well as working with other Jewish, Christian, Muslim and interfaith communities to build awareness for the need for social action. Current projects include programming around Darfur, hunger, homelessness and housing.

Interfaith Hospitality Network

IHN is a program for congregations to provide food, shelter, and safety to homeless families.  At CBI and more than 20 other congregations in Austin, we welcome up to 4 homeless families into our congregation for a week at a time 4 times a year.  Every "host" week we need between 40 - 60 volunteers to assist in a variety of capacities, such as seting up rooms, bringing food, spending the night in the Temple, etc.  Locally, IHN is run by the Foundation for the Homeless.  We welcome all members who want to learn more or participate in this on-going and important project.
