Friday Night Shabbat Oneg Information
Thank you very much for sponsoring the Oneg Shabbat on Friday night. Your sponsorship exemplifies your commitment to the Temple and is a Mitzvah and act of Tzedakah.
Here are some tips for sponsoring the Oneg Shabbat (refreshments following services) on Friday evening.
- There may be other simchas (happy event) that evening which would mean co-sponsorship with other families.
- Please remember that typically about 150 people attend Friday night services. all the Executive Director the week before your sponsor date to see if anything special is planned that will affect attendance.
- We recommend a minimum of three pieces of food per person, cold beverages, decaffeinated coffee, cream, sugar and sweeteners. (Please see suggested quantities below) Some “Onegs” have included choices of fresh fruit, cheeses, and other items.
- We also request that you provide Challah and one bottle of apple juice for the kiddish (blessing over wine) during the service.
- If you are participating in the 6:00 pm service, please discuss with Sisterhood or the Executive Director, how to participate in the 7:00 pm dinner.
- The custodial staff will set up all silver platters, serving utensils, plates, silverware, coffee cups and saucers, coffee makers, and plain white paper beverage napkins, water, coffee and lemonade for you.. They will set out all the items for you and take care of all clean up.
- You may choose to use a caterer to help you. You may also elect to set up trays yourself or have friends meet you in the kitchen Friday afternoon to help you.
Bimah Flowers
It is minhag (custom) for sponsoring families to provide floral arrangements or plants to be placed in front of the lecterns on the bimah Friday night.
- This is completely optional but let the Executive Director know if you choose this option.
- Make sure the flowers arrive in the Sanctuary by 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
- Florists that have provided bimah flowers in the past are KaBloom and the Flower Bucket.
Suggested Items for Oneg Shabbat
- Three pieces of dessert, cheese and or fruit per person (approx 600 pieces-can also bring large sheet cakes)
- 1 Challah bread
- One pound of decaffeinated coffee
- Bottle Kosher wine
- 64 oz bottle of apple juice
- 1-quart of half and half
- 1-box of sugar and sweet and low packets
- Any other variety of cold drinks or punch that you would like other than lemonade
