B'nei Mitzvah Program

It is a special time for the Congregation when a student becomes bar or bat mitzvah. Becoming “responsible for the Commandments” signifies the formal beginning of Jewish adult life. It includes studying Jewish scripture, becoming proficient in Hebrew, learning the teachings of Torah, leading and participating in Shabbat services and more.

Learning about Jewish life cycle events is an integral part of the B’nei Mitzvah program. Participation in seasonal holiday cycles, observing Shabbat and performing mitzvot with friends all help instill our way of life into growing minds.

Development of strong ethics and values, evolution of individual and collective Jewish identities, and an understanding of his or her importance in tikkun olam, repairing the world, is all part of becoming a bar/bat mitzvah.

The bar/bat mitzvah year is intense, filled with classes, meetings, learning, and new relationships. A special feeling of Jewish identity and inclusion develops as students and their families make new friends, participate together in activities, and join in each other’s simchas. Students build a positive Jewish self-image that remains with them in years to come.

The family plays a vital role in preparation. Many find a renewed sense of Judaism in their homes as they study together the substance of what it means to live an active Jewish life.
